Many passengers confuse cash refunds with travel credits. Knowing what you are legally entitled to receive after cancelling can save hundreds of dollars.

Cash Refunds

A refund sends money back to the original form of payment. It is guaranteed when you purchase an unrestricted refundable fare, cancel within 24 hours of booking, or when the airline cancels or significantly delays your flight.

Flight Credits & Trip Credits

When you voluntarily cancel a standard non-refundable Main Cabin or premium ticket, you receive travel credit. These credits have an expiration date (typically 1 year from original issue date) and can be used to book future travel on American Airlines.
