Travel plans don't always stay the same. You may need to move your American Airlines flight to another date, choose a different departure time, change an airport, or correct a passenger's name.

American Airlines allows eligible passengers to modify many reservations through the “Change trip” option on its website or app. Depending on the ticket, the new itinerary and fare difference, additional payment may be required. American also states that eligible customers can change their departure or arrival airport, departure date, arrival date, or both.

However, not every ticket has the same flexibility. Basic Economy tickets, same-day changes, award tickets and name corrections have their own rules.

If the Change trip option isn't available, you may need to contact American Airlines Reservations. If you are rebooking and wish to move into a premium cabin or lie-flat seat, consult our American Airlines Flight Upgrade Guide.

Change American Airlines Flight Date

Changing the travel date is one of the most common reasons passengers modify a reservation. If your ticket is eligible, you can use Change trip to search for another departure date and select an available flight.

For example, if your original flight is scheduled for September 20 but you need to travel on September 24, you can check whether an eligible flight is available on the new date.

The price of the new flight matters. If the replacement flight costs more, American Airlines may require you to pay the difference in ticket price. American also states that travel must generally be completed within one year of the original ticket date.

Change American Airlines Flight Time

If you don't need to change the travel date but need to leave earlier or later, you may be able to select another flight on the same date. For regular flight changes, search for available flights through Change trip and review the price difference. For a change on the same day of travel, American Airlines has a separate same-day change process with additional eligibility requirements.

Change American Airlines Departure or Arrival Airport

American Airlines' current reservation FAQ specifically states that eligible customers can change their departure or arrival airport through the Change trip process. This means an eligible reservation may allow you to select a different airport instead of the airport shown on your original ticket.

However, changing an airport can also change the route and fare. The available options and any additional amount will be shown during the change process.

Can I change my destination?

A destination change can be more complicated than simply moving your flight date. If the new itinerary requires a different origin, destination or routing, the available options depend on the ticket and reservation rules. The online system will show whether the change is available.

If the change you want isn't offered online, contact American Airlines Reservations before canceling the original ticket.

Is There a Fee to Change an American Airlines Flight?

There isn't one single change fee that applies to every American Airlines ticket. The cost can depend on:

  • Fare type
  • Route
  • Date of travel
  • Availability
  • Whether the change is made on the same day
  • Whether the new flight has a higher fare
  • Where the ticket was purchased

For many eligible regular tickets, the major cost consideration is the difference in fare between the original and new flight. American Airlines also notes that some trips have specific change-fee rules, including certain international markets. Always review the final price before confirming the change.

Do I Have to Pay a Fare Difference?

Possibly. If your new flight costs more than the original ticket, American Airlines may require you to pay the difference.

For example:

Original ticket: $250

New flight: $340

Difference: $90

In this situation, the system may ask you to pay the additional $90 before confirming the change. If the new flight is cheaper, the treatment of the difference depends on the applicable fare rules. Check the amount shown during the change process rather than assuming you'll receive a cash refund (see our American Airlines Refund Policy Guide for details on residual value and travel credits).

Can I Change Basic Economy on American Airlines?

Basic Economy has more restrictions than many other American Airlines fares. American Airlines currently states that Basic Economy tickets cannot be changed after 24 hours. There can be special exceptions or temporary travel waivers for particular routes and circumstances, so passengers should check the current terms attached to their reservation. If you have a Basic Economy ticket and your plans change, check the reservation before assuming that a normal flight change is available. In many situations, canceling under the 24-hour grace window or taking a trip credit is the better path; review our American Airlines Cancellation Policy Guide for full options.

American Airlines Same-Day Flight Change

Same-day travel is handled differently from changing a flight several days or weeks before departure. American Airlines' same-day flight change allows eligible passengers to confirm a seat on another American Airlines flight on the same day of departure, when eligible seats are available.

American currently states that the new flight must:

  • Be on the same day.
  • Have the same departure and arrival airports.
  • Be confirmed within 24 hours of departure of the desired flight.
  • Meet the applicable route and fare eligibility requirements.

Same-day change availability can vary by market.

Same-Day Confirmed Change vs. Standby

These are not the same thing.

  • Same-day confirmed change: You receive a confirmed seat on another eligible flight.
  • Same-day standby: You ask to be placed on a different flight, but a seat is not guaranteed.

American's current same-day travel information lists different fees by market. For example, its published table currently shows confirmed changes starting at $60 for U.S., Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands travel, while standby is listed at $0 in that market. Other markets have different rules. Because same-day fees and eligibility can vary, check the current American Airlines page when making the request.

American Airlines Same-Day Standby

Same-day standby can be useful when the confirmed-change option isn't available. American explains that standby allows a passenger to wait for an earlier eligible flight on the same route. Unlike a confirmed same-day change, standby does not guarantee a seat.

American currently says passengers can request a same-day change or standby beginning 24 hours before departure. At the airport, passengers can ask a team member at the ticket counter or gate to list them for standby, with the published guidance saying to do so at least 45 minutes before departure.

American Airlines Name Correction

Changing a passenger's name is different from changing a flight.

Important: American Airlines does not allow a ticket to be transferred from one person to another. Its published name-change restrictions specifically state that changing the name from one person to another person is not allowed.

However, American Airlines does allow certain name corrections to fix a passenger's name so that it matches the required government identification. This can include situations such as:

  • Typographical or spelling mistakes
  • First-name or last-name corrections
  • Middle-name issues
  • Inverted names
  • Marriage or maiden-name situations
  • Divorce-related name corrections
  • Legal-name corrections
  • Secondary last names
  • Matching the name to TSA-required documents

American's published name-correction guidelines distinguish these corrections from transferring a ticket to a completely different passenger.

Typographical Name Correction

A small spelling mistake is not the same as changing the passenger. For example, if the passenger's name was entered incorrectly during booking, American's name-correction procedures may allow the name to be corrected to match the passenger's government identification.

American's published guidelines state that eligible minor corrections can be made for wholly American Airlines/American Eagle itineraries on qualifying tickets, while other itineraries may follow major name-correction procedures.

First and Last Name Issues

Your name on the reservation should correspond with the identification you use for travel. American's guidelines state that the name in the reservation, ticket and boarding pass requires the passenger's first and last name as they appear on the government ID used for travel. If the first name, last name or the order of the name was entered incorrectly, contact American Airlines or your travel agent to determine the appropriate correction process.

What About a Middle Name?

A missing middle name does not necessarily mean you need to change the ticket. American's published name-correction guidance says that when a customer's identification contains a middle name, the middle name can be included in the Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD/DOCS), and a ticket reissue isn't necessarily required. If you're concerned about a missing or incorrect middle name, check the reservation well before departure.

Marriage or Divorce Name Correction

A passenger may need a name correction after marriage, divorce or another legal name change. American's name-correction guidelines specifically recognize married/maiden names and divorce-related names as examples of name corrections rather than transferring a ticket to another passenger. Supporting documentation may be relevant depending on the situation. If the name on your passport or government ID differs from your reservation, contact American Airlines before traveling.

Passport or TSA Name Mismatch

For international travel, the name on your reservation should match the travel documents and information required for security and immigration processing. American's published guidelines state that name corrections are made to match TSA-required documents and also note that passengers with programs such as TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI should ensure the reservation name matches the name submitted for the relevant application. If you discover a mismatch, don't wait until the airport. Contact American Airlines or your booking agency as early as possible.

Can I Change My American Airlines Ticket to Another Person's Name?

No. A name correction and a name change are two different things. A correction fixes the existing passenger's name. Transferring the ticket from one passenger to another would create a different traveler.

American Airlines explicitly states that name changes from one person to another are not allowed. So, if John Smith purchases a ticket but later wants to give that ticket to Michael Brown, this is not treated as a normal name correction.

Can I Change My American Airlines Ticket Online?

For eligible reservations, yes. American Airlines allows passengers to use the Change trip option online or through the app. You can select a new eligible flight and review any applicable fare difference before confirming. If you've already checked in, however, American says you cannot change the reservation online and should contact Reservations for assistance.

Can I Change My Flight After Check-In?

Not through the normal online process. American Airlines' travel information FAQ states that customers cannot change their reservation online after checking in. Instead, they should contact Reservations for assistance. If you have already checked in and your plans have changed, contact American before your scheduled departure.

Can I Change My Flight After Receiving a Boarding Pass?

Receiving a boarding pass does not necessarily mean that no change is possible. However, once you've checked in, American says online reservation changes aren't available. You should contact Reservations for assistance. If you are already at the airport, an American Airlines airport representative can also help you understand the available options.

Can I Change One Passenger on a Reservation?

If multiple people are traveling under the same reservation, you may need to handle passengers separately when making changes. The exact process depends on the reservation and ticket structure. If you need to change only one passenger's flight while leaving the others unchanged, use the online Change trip option if available. Otherwise, contact American Airlines Reservations.

Can I Change a Flight Booked Through a Travel Agent?

You may be able to change it, but the booking source matters. If your travel agency issued the ticket, contact the agency first. Some reservations have to be modified by the original ticketing agency rather than directly through American Airlines.

Keep your:

  • Agency booking reference
  • American Airlines confirmation code
  • Ticket number
  • Passenger details

available when requesting the change.

Can I Change an American Airlines Award Ticket?

Eligible AAdvantage award reservations can be changed through the American Airlines website. American's AAdvantage guidance says that when an eligible award trip is changed, the miles from the original trip are reinstated to the original AAdvantage account, while a difference in taxes may still need to be paid. Any amount owed to the passenger is refunded to the original credit card. American says mileage reinstatement can take up to 72 hours. The exact result depends on the award reservation and the new itinerary.

How Many Times Can I Change an American Airlines Flight?

There isn't one universal number that applies to every American Airlines ticket. The number of changes available can depend on:

  • Fare type
  • Route
  • Booking conditions
  • Whether the trip is eligible for online changes
  • Whether the ticket has already been partially used
  • Applicable special travel waivers

Rather than assuming you can make unlimited changes, check the Change trip option for your specific reservation.

Can American Airlines Change My Flight Automatically?

Yes. Airlines sometimes need to change schedules because of operational requirements, weather, aircraft changes or other circumstances. If American Airlines changes or cancels your flight, the airline may automatically rebook you. American says passengers can view the updated itinerary through the app or aa.com and, where available, choose a different flight. If your flight has been changed, check the new itinerary before making a separate voluntary change.

Tips Before Changing Your American Airlines Flight

Before confirming a change, check these points:

1. Check your fare type: Basic Economy and other fares can have different restrictions.

2. Compare the new fare: A different date or flight time may have a higher ticket price.

3. Don't confuse a name correction with a name change: Fixing a spelling mistake is different from transferring a ticket to another person.

4. Make changes before checking in when possible: Once checked in, American says you can't modify the reservation online.

5. Check whether American changed your flight: If the airline has already changed your schedule, review the options provided by American before making a voluntary change.

6. Keep your confirmation email: After changing your flight, save the updated itinerary and confirmation number.

Final Thoughts

The American Airlines flight change policy depends heavily on the type of ticket you purchased and the type of change you want to make.

For eligible reservations, American currently allows passengers to use Change trip to select another flight and change the departure or arrival date and, in eligible cases, the departure or arrival airport. A fare difference may apply.

Same-day changes work differently, with separate rules for confirmed changes and standby. Basic Economy also has stricter restrictions after the initial 24-hour period. And when it comes to passenger names, American makes an important distinction: correcting the existing passenger's name may be possible, but transferring the ticket to another person is not allowed.

Because airline rules and special waivers can change, always review the options displayed for your specific reservation before confirming a flight change.
